M/V Kaybird
74’ Hatteras Motoryacht
Owner: McVean Aviation

Description of work:

The original engines were removed through a hole in the port hullside of the vessel. The Saunders Yachtworks team cut the hole to access the port engine room. The starboard engine had to be slid across the midline of the vessel and come out the same way. New Series 60 MTU engines, rated at 825 horsepower, and ZF gears were replaced in the engine rooms. Saunders team then repaired the hole in the hull and blended new paint to match the old.

The owner of the Kaybird chose a repower option because of the increased efficiency of modern 4-stroke engine technology. The old engines were also due for overhaul and they were looking forward to the increased reliability and performance of the new engines. And how did the engines do? At their typical cruising speed of 10 knots, they have doubled their fuel mileage!
